Blacksmithing placement with Chris Topp Ltd

Neal Armstrong (TBSBS)Neal Armstrong worked as a computer engineer for most of his working life, but had always maintained an interest in blacksmithing. He is realising his ambition by developing his skills with Chris Topp Ltd with a 12 month placement.

Carpentry placement with Works Department, Lincoln Cathedral

Jamie ArnoldJamie Arnold had gained his NVQ level 2 in site carpentry and was working as a self-employed carpenter in Lincolnshire. He is working with the Lead and Timber Team in the Works Department at Lincoln Cathedral, at the same time collecting evidence for his NVQ Level 3 heritage Skills in Carpentry/Joinery.

Thatching placement with Stephen Letch

Boz Williams (TBSBS)Boz Willows had already achieved his blacksmithing from Herefordshire College and had a fair amount of experience in harvesting straw and spar making. He is now building on these skills and learning with thatcher Stephen Letch.

Joinery placement with Shaun Allen woodworking

Nigel SmithNigel Smith had worked as a panel beater and body repair technician for over 25 years. In his spare time he enjoys restoring vintage cars and motorbikes. His dexterity, care and eye for detail are transferable skills that have led him to expand his knowledge into joinery. Working closely with Shaun Allen, Nigel is gaining valuable experience working on a range of private and National Trust historic buildings.

Earth building placement with Cob in Cornwall Ltd

Richard O’Connor wanted to develop his skills in sustainable building techniques and feels passionately about nature and the sustainable environment. The experience he is developing with Cob in Cornwall Ltd is assisting him to learn skills that will allow him to work on older and new build earth building projects.

Thatching placement with Pembrokeshire thatching and Carpentry Services

Dafydd DriverDafydd Driver has always wanted to be a thatcher. He was brought up on a farm and has always felt most comfortable outdoors. Training alongside Alan Jones of Pembrokeshire Thatching and Carpentry Services, he is learning the range of thatching processes for new and conservation type projects. He will be starting at Knuston College in January 2009 to work towards his NVQ Level 2 in Thatching.

Carpentry placement with Traditional Buildings Ltd

Adam Bedwell has a great passion for ecologically minded building and has been working in this field for several years. Traditional carpentry techniques are a fundamental basis of such building and Adam is working with experienced craftsmen to develop his knowledge and practical skills so he can use them in both the heritage and new build sectors.

Rob HeatleyRob Heatley has been working in the construction industry for a while and undertook City & Guilds Level 1 in brickwork. He is currently undertaking a 6 month with Mathias Restoration to develop his traditional brickwork techniques, particularly in gauged brickwork.

Stone masonry placement with The National Trust, Hardwick Hall

James StoneJames Stone has changed career and has been studying for his Advanced Construction Award in Stonemasonry at York College. He is using the experience he is gaining with The Masonry Team at Hardwick Hall to work towards his NVQ Level 3 Heritage Skills in Stonemasonry and accelerate his work rate.

Painting and Decorating placement with Angel interiors

Lisa Ferguson had worked hard to gain her Advance Construction Award in painting and Decorating at Salisbury College. Keen to work in the heritage industry, she is undertaking a 2 year placement with Angel Interiors. During this time she will work towards gaining her NVQ Level 3 Heritage Skills in Painting and Decorating through her site work and training courses run through the company.

Fibrous plasterwork placement with Locker and Riley

Becky Starmer had gained a distinction in her Art Foundation Degree and had been using her modelling skills working for Locker & Riley. By undertaking a 2 year training placement in fibrous plasterwork, she hopes to add to her talent by developing her practical skills and in the process gain her NVQ Level 3 Heritage Skills in this field.

Structural carpentry placement with McCurdy & Co

Guy Arnall was working as a wine buyer while studying for his Advance Construction Award. He is currently carrying out a 2year placement with McCurdy & Co to develop his structural timber framing skills. During this time he hopes to gain his NVQ Level 3 heritage Skills in Carpentry.

Marc Hare is a self-employed painter and decorator. During his 6 month placement at St. Fagan’s Museum, he hopes to learn more about traditional materials and techniques so that he can widen his market for his own business.

Mathew EvansMathew Evans excelled at college and was awarded the Dulux Apprentice of the Year 2008. He has succeeded in gaining 2 placements – the first with Devereux Decorators and the second at St. Fagan’s Museum. A total of 9 months bursary will help him towards gaining his NVW Level 3 Heritage Skills in Painting and Decorating.
